Castelo de São Jorge

The Moorish castle above Alfama is Lisbon's single best-known viewpoint. Ramparts, cannons, peacocks, and a wide-open plaza looking down over the red-tiled roofs of the old city to the Tejo and the 25 de Abril bridge. Allow the full afternoon light for the photos, and don't skip the archaeological site — Phoenician, Roman and Islamic layers under one roof. Reach it via bus 737 from Praça da Figueira or on foot up the steep alleys of Alfama (about 20 minutes from Rossio).

Jerónimos Monastery

The definitive Manueline monument. Vaulted stone ceilings, seaweed and rope carvings that celebrate the Age of Discovery, and the tomb of Vasco da Gama in the church. Commissioned by King Manuel I in 1501 and paid for with pepper tax from the newly-opened trade routes to India. The cloister alone is worth the trip. Torre de Belém standing on the north bank of the Tejo

Belém Tower

The fortified tower on the Tejo that guarded the port from 1515. Reopened on 27 May 2026 after major restoration, with entry now managed through timed slots. It's smaller inside than the outside suggests, but the top gives you the sightline over the river the Discoveries fleet actually sailed from. Narrow spiral stairs limit access to small groups at a time — expect a short wait even with your reservation on busy days. Combine with the neighbouring Jerónimos on a single Belém afternoon.

Royal Treasury Museum

Portugal's crown jewels — the largest collection of jewellery from the House of Braganza. Housed inside the Ajuda Palace but with its own entrance. Compact, dim, dramatic. Skip if you've done the Ajuda Palace on the same day; combine with a bus 728 ride from central Belém.

National Tile Museum

Five centuries of azulejo art inside a former convent — including the astonishing 23-metre panoramic panel of pre-earthquake Lisbon from 1700. Currently closed for major renovation works funded by the EU Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). Official reopening date not yet announced, expected in 2026. A temporary museum shop is open at the Loja do Palácio Foz (Praça dos Restauradores 13). Check museunacionaldoazulejo.gov.pt before you go.

Pilar 7 Bridge Experience

Climb inside pillar 7 of the 25 de Abril suspension bridge for a glass-floor viewing platform 80 m above the Tejo. Not a long visit, but the vertigo alone is memorable. Note: the lift is currently out of service — access to the top viewpoint is via around 372 steps. Combine with the LX Factory nearby for lunch — a 5-minute walk east.

Lisboa Story Centre

Immersive audio-visual walkthrough of Lisbon's history — Phoenician trading post to the 1755 earthquake to the Carnation Revolution. Great primer on day one, especially with older kids. Right on Terreiro do Paço, so it slots into any downtown loop.

National Ancient Art Museum

Portugal's national gallery — Nuno Gonçalves' extraordinary Saint Vincent panels alone justify the visit. Also holds the country's best Namban screens (16th-century Japanese depictions of Portuguese traders) and a strong Bosch triptych. Well-designed, uncrowded compared to Belém, and easy to reach via bus 727 or a walk along the riverfront. Note: the museum may still be closed for renovation works (PRR) at time of your visit — check museudearteantiga.pt for the current status.

Sintra Mitos e Lendas

A theatrical multi-sensory walk through Sintra's medieval legends — good starter if you arrive in Sintra without a plan. It's right at the tourist office in central Sintra, walking distance from the train station. Combine with the free CP train from Rossio and the discounted Pena Palace higher up the hill.

Mafra National Palace

Portugal's largest royal palace-monastery complex, 45 minutes north of Lisbon. Baroque on an unhinged scale — one of the great libraries of Europe, plus a monastic hospital and a basilica with six historic organs. Bus Mafrense from Campo Grande (not free with the card, count on €5 return), or a rented-car day-trip combined with Ericeira on the coast.

Baroque dome of the Panteão Nacional above Alfama

National Pantheon

The great white baroque dome above Alfama, originally the Church of Santa Engrácia — now the burial place of Portuguese heads of state and cultural giants including Amália Rodrigues. Climb to the outer rooftop for one of the city's widest 360° views. Combine with a walk down through Alfama's alleys back to Baixa.

Padrão dos Descobrimentos on the Tejo waterfront

Discoveries Monument

The 56-metre stylised caravel jutting into the Tejo, sculpted with 33 explorers, missionaries and cartographers who defined Portugal's Age of Discovery. Take the elevator up for a top-deck view over Belém, the river and the 25 de Abril bridge. On the ground, note the marble compass rose gifted by South Africa in 1960.

Wrought-iron Santa Justa lift in downtown Lisbon

Elevador de Santa Justa

The 1902 Belle Époque wrought-iron elevator linking Baixa to Chiado — 45 metres of neo-gothic latticework designed by Raul Mesnier de Ponsard, a Portuguese engineer inspired by Gustave Eiffel. Note: the lift itself is currently out of service for refurbishment. When operating normally, hours are 07:30–23:00 (May–Oct) / 07:30–21:50 (Nov–Apr). The top-floor viewing platform (miradouro) can still be reached on foot from Largo do Carmo. Check the current status with CARRIS before you go.

Closed on Mondays — plan around it

Most of the big Belém and downtown museums close on Mondays. If your Lisboa Card covers a Monday, spend it on:

Public transport & Sintra day-trip — trains run every day
The Fado Museum, Alfama walks — the Fado Museum stays open Mondays only if it's a public holiday, otherwise closed. Free walks around Alfama are always open.

Sites closed on Mondays include Jerónimos, Belém Tower, the National Tile Museum, the National Coach Museum, the Ancient Art Museum, the National Pantheon, the Chiado Museum and the Fado Museum — that's roughly one-third of your available options.
